Smart people would actually have the countertop notch down 4" for a standard miter saw such that the material lays flush on the table. Normal people would have full runners to make a continuous track elevated for the material. Lazy people find scrap to make a quick shim when they’re cutting something a bit too long. That was me. Until today!
Behold my makeshift fastened shim system. 4" 2x4 atop 8" 2x4 atop 12" 1x6, making for 4" height overall. The edge of the highest point is set 24" away from the blade. Well that sort of helps but what if the piece is even too long for that? FEAR NOT.
You see? They pivot! Open them up 180 degrees and you’ve got support up 43-1/4" away from the blade.
“Sooo...this is better than a continuous track... how?”
It isn’t!
“Oh.”

Imagine having the room for a workbench to begin with. We’ve been using the rails of an open trailer with an old door propped across it for a while because reasons.

I used an old bookshelf today as a bench for my circular saw, since it was in the pile of crap awaiting the next large item pickup from the trash collectors.

I cut some paneling today on top of one of those gray plastic storage tubs. I maaaaayyyybe got a little too close to the edge of the lid and now have a slice through one side of the container...

Wrong, it's not even mine — my dad left it here a week before Covid.

Better setup then I have. Mitre saw on the ground, with a couple garden bricks to raise the materials.

That's actually a better setup than I have at home. I have an even better saw (that one is good, but mine is a slider), but it's just bolted to the top of an old tool box. No supports at all. I have plans that I will build ... Someday ... Possibly

What’s that black metal hoop on the left hand side that looks like a handle? My DeWalt miter saw came with
a device that supports the material attached via the holes that the handle is using.

When I bought my Dewalt miter saw when I did the floors in the old house, I think it was Lowe’s that had a crazy “by the saw, get the stand for $50 ” type of deal. I’m quite pleased with the stand.

They're handles!

On further thought, the extension didn’t come with the saw, it was an accessory:
I guess a few pieces of wood cost less than $24.32

For years, scrap on the floor was good enough for our mitre saw. Then, one day, I walked into a hardware store and saw a sign on a Ryobi saw stand that said $75. And it was worth it...
I imagine this innovation leaves you with much the same feeling...
